1. Academic and Research Activity, Conferences and Workshops

In 2011, the faculty and academic staff published a host of scholarly and specialist contributions, both nationally and internationally. They took part in academic and specialist events, gatherings and discussions, and they also compiled scholarly collections and conference proceedings. Many of these materials were published either in current journals or as academic monographs. The School of Management (VŠM) faculty presented the outcomes of their scholarly and research activities at academic events not only in the Slovak Republic, but also in the USA, Finland, Austria, the UK, Germany, China, Romania, Serbia, the Czech Republic and other countries.

The School of Management`s (VŠM) professors and assoc. professors served on specialist commissions for doctoral dissertations in various higher education establishments and universities in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic. They also served as members of editorial boards of academic and specialist journals, in addition to their work in national and international organizations, commissions and advisory bodies.

On April 19, 2011, the School of Management (VŠM) hosted the 3rd International Research Conference “Management Challenges in the 21st Century“ under the auspices of the first Deputy Vice Minister and Minister of Transport, Post and Telecommunications of the Slovak Republic Mr. Ján Figeľ . The topic of the conference was “Transport and Logistics: Opportunity for Slovakia in the Era of Knowledge Economy.“ Besides the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Mr. Ján Figeľ , many distinguished academic experts from the Slovak Republic (from various colleges and universities as well from the Slovak Academy of Science), the Czech republic, Belgium and Vietnam took part in the conference. Also, business communities were represented by experts coming from GEFCO and ČSAD Hodonín. The conference was held in three section: Selected problems of Finance and Banking in an Era of Knowledge Economy, International Transport and Logistics, Selected problems of Management and Marketing in the Era of Knowledge Economy. The conference contributions were reviewed and published in the format of CD-ROM conference proceedings.

Also, in 2011, the School of Management (VŠM) held its sixth year of the workshop focused on Knowledge Management. The culmination was a two-day event – the 6th International Conference focusing on knowledge management, which took place in October 2011 at the School of Management (VŠM). Very much like in the case of the conference proceedings noted above, the workshop resulted in publication of contribution outcomes by the School of Management`s (VŠM) faculty staff and conference visitors.

In April and May 2011, the School of Management (VŠM) co-sponsored workshops for the student body and the staff of WHU Koblenz, Carnegie Mellon Pittsburg, Ross School of Business University of Michigan, Wirtschatsuniversitaet Wien, and Carlson School of Management, Minneapolis. These academic events focused on the study of entrepreneurial environment in Central and Eastern Europe as well as matters of common interest in the area of academia, scholarship, and research. In addition to presentation of achievements of scholarly and research activities at the School of Management (VŠM), the visitors could meets experts and top executives of the Slovak Republic at the Goverment Office and discuss topical issues with them. Moreover, they also got access to responsible representatives of the Slovak Parliament and companies, such as IBM ISC Slovakia, Dell Slovakia, and Volkswagen Slovakia. Besides the indicated activities, the School of Management (VŠM) teaching staff acted as consultants and experts in developing materials for the needs of academic research and decision-making institutions of the Slovak Republic.

2.International and inter-institutional co-operation

In 2011, our faculty and research staff collaborated in the area of academia and research with the following SR institutions: the Economic Institute of the Slovak Academy of Science, the Economic University in Bratislava, the Comenius University in Bratislava, the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications in Žilina. As for international universities, of major importance was cooperation with the following higher education establishments in the Czech Republic: the University of Finance and Administration in Prague, the Slezská University in Opava, the Charles` University in Prague.

In 2011, the School of Management (VŠM) continued in cooperation with Wirtschatfuniversitaet Wien, in particular with two of its departments: Competence Center for Central and Easten Europe (prof. Arnold Schuh) and Department of Management (prof. Juergen Muehlbacher, prof. Wolfgang Mayrhofer). The project 5C Cross-Cultural Collaboration on Contemporary Careers (5C), the School of Management, as the only Slovak university, became a part of a network of 38 leading world universities and colleges that are involved in research in the field of career management. The research is led by the Cranfield School of Management, which is one of the world's most prestigious schools in the area of human resource management.
